How to build healthier habits?

Want to make a change in your life for the better? That's awesome, have a read of this blog about how to build healthier habits, but first what is a habit? A habit is a routine of behaviour that is repeated regularly and tends to occur subconsciously. Habits can be good or bad. They take a long time to become a routine. With a positive mindset, and planning you can build healthy habits that stick. Use these tips below to help reach your goals and build healthier habits.

How to build healthier habits in 8 steps?

1. Identify patterns
Identify things that happen in your life and notice patterns, let's say you want to have breakfast every day. but you notice the pattern you do is skip breakfast, then eat everything in sight in the evening. How can you improve? What causes you to do this? Is this because you want to punish yourself for binging so you skip meals? So instead of punishing yourself, try eating breakfast because it makes you feel good.

2. Set out a plan
Make a plan that includes small, reasonable goals and specific actions you'll take to move towards your goals. Creating a plan will make you more clear on what habits you want to improve on. How can you change things around you to support your goals? Maybe you need to, prepare your food or get your clothes ready the night before. Or you might need to reach out to a coach to keep you accountable or block out time in your calendar for habits you want to work on.

3. Don't change your whole life
Do not change your whole life. You don't want to change every single bad habit you do right away. Because it will be harder to maintain and you will most likely fall back on old habits. Start with 1-2 habits you want to improve on and be consistent with them!

4. Incorporate small changes
Like the last tip, don't change everything at once. Start with small changes and go from there. Instead of wishing to exercise 5 times a week but you are currently not doing anything at all, start with 3 times a week and build it up!

5. Track your progress
Track your progress and document it! Use a habit tracker or a journal. This will help with your accountability and compliance.

6. Reach out to a coach
If you are struggling with compliance it might be worth reaching out to a coach to help guide you. They can assist your goals and work with you to help achieve them.

7. Practice and just keep going!!
Some days will be harder than others, but don't give up! Just keep going and refer back to your why and your goals. Ask yourself why are you doing this? Why is this important to me?

8. Don't be hard on yourself
If things don't go to plan, don't beat yourself up. Just remember if you "fall off track" for one day, your progress hasn't disappeared just keep going. Refer back to what you were doing and just keep going. Also, remember it takes time to build habits!
